Over the past year, Americans’ support for legalizing pot has surged 10 percentage points.

That’s according to Gallup, which has been asking the question since 1969. That means that 58 percent of Americans — a clear majority for the first time in more than 40 years — support legalizing marijuana and just 39 percent say the opposite.

To see the dramatic shift in public opinion, just look at this historical graph from Gallup:

Gallup graph showing support for legalizing marijuana.

This is also a trend we’ve seen in other polls. We noted the Gallup poll in 2011 that found support for legalization had reached 50 percent for the first time; and we noted a Pew poll in 2013 that found a 52-percent majority supported legalization for the first time.

This poll shows that support for legalization has accelerated. Gallup explains:

“Success at the ballot box in the past year in Colorado and Washington may have increased Americans’ tolerance for marijuana legalization. Support for legalization has jumped 10 percentage points since last November and the legal momentum shows no sign of abating. Last week, California’s second-highest elected official, Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom, said that pot should be legal in the Golden State, and advocates of legalization are poised to introduce a statewide referendum in 2014 to legalize the drug.

“The Obama administration has also been flexible on the matter. Despite maintaining the government’s firm opposition to legalizing marijuana under federal law, in late August Deputy Attorney General James Cole announced the Justice Department would not challenge the legality of Colorado’s and Washington’s successful referendums, provided that those states maintain strict rules regarding the drug’s sale and distribution.

“The movement to legalize marijuana mirrors the relatively recent success of the movement to legalize gay marriage, which voters have also approved now in 14 states. Public support for gay marriage, which Americans also overwhelmingly opposed in the past, has increased dramatically, reaching majority support in the last two years.”

As U.S. averts default, Japan and China brace for next dollar drama

By Wayne Arnold and Leika Kihara

HONG KONG/TOKYO (Reuters) – Deal or no deal, the U.S. Congress’ dance with default impressed policymakers and investors in China and Japan with just how vulnerable their own economic revival plans are to the next political tantrum on Capitol Hill.

The 11th-hour agreement on Wednesday between Congressional Republicans and Democrats to raise the limit on U.S. government borrowing and end a 16-day government shutdown also averted a default on U.S. Treasury bonds that had threatened the global economy and financial system.

But Congress gets another chance to hold U.S. creditworthiness hostage early next year ahead of a new February 7 deadline to approve a debt ceiling increase.

“We’re glad a deal has been struck,” said a Japanese policymaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity. “But the uncertainty will remain and it will be the same thing all over again early next year.”

He and other Japanese officials say they have already developed contingency plans that include flooding Japan‘s banking system with cash to keep markets functioning however panicked investors become. And analysts say China, whose Communist leaders are due to hold a key policy meeting next month, may step up a push for global acceptance of its currency, the yuan or renminbi, as an alternative to the U.S. dollar in international trade.

“They might actually consider accelerating the process,” said Vincent Chan, head of equity research at Credit Suisse in Hong Kong. “You strengthen the case of making the renminbi a genuine international currency, because the Americans are unreliable.”

Perhaps no two economies outside the United States have more at stake in Washington’s recurring drama than Japan and China.

Not only are they the second- and third-largest economies, but they lend Washington more money than any other single nation. China held $1.28 trillion in U.S. Treasury securities at the end of July and Japan owned $1.14 trillion. A default would likely have devastated the value of their holdings.

More than that, though, both nations have adopted policies to revitalize their own economies that to some extent rely on the improving economic appetite, stable currency and increasing indebtedness of the world’s largest economy.

China is trying to deflate a dangerous credit bubble and wealth imbalances with a series of reforms that include slowly easing controls on moving money into and out of the country and allowing its currency to gently appreciate.

Analysts predict investors faced with a U.S. default would try to sell dollars for yuan, forcing China’s central bank to either buy up dollars at a time when the government issuing them isn’t honoring its obligations or allow a rapid increase in the yuan’s value that would hurt exports and worsen the country’s credit bubble.

In a sign of such market pressure, the yuan hit a record high on Friday for a fifth consecutive day against the dollar, partly as investors worried about the economic impact of the U.S. shutdown.

“If China allows the yuan to rise sharply, it could be very risky given the possible asset bubbles in the country,” said He Yifeng, an economist at Hongyuan Securities in Beijing.

Japan, meanwhile, is trying to end 20 years of deflation and anemic growth with a blend of policies named for their chief proponent, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “Abenomics” relies on reviving domestic consumption and investment in part by weakening the yen, boosting the earnings and stock prices of giant exporters like Toyota Motors Corp and Hitachi Ltd.

A U.S. default would likely prompt investors to buy yen.

“That would undoubtedly pose a headwind against Abenomics, which has much depended on a weak yen and higher share prices buoyed by the feel-good mood it has generated,” said Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JPMorgan Securities in Tokyo.

A default also stands to hamper a U.S. recovery and with it a nascent rebound in global exports. A default in the first quarter of 2014 would hit just as Japan’s economy girds for an April sales tax increase and as China’s economy loses the effects of accelerated public works spending and re-stocking of inventories.

There are no bond markets large enough to give China and Japan an alternative to U.S. Treasuries for the dollars they accumulate selling exports. So the prospect of another U.S. default drama next year is likely to lend new urgency to China’s preferred solution: conducting less trade in dollars and more in renminbi.

About 18 percent of China’s total trade is settled in yuan and it has registered a sharp increase this year after stagnating for most of last year.

Much of the increase has come in China’s trade with economies outside the United States or the European Union, its biggest demand centers, although it accelerated plans to internationalize the currency with agreements this month with Britain and the European Central Bank.

Achieving more trade in yuan, however, means giving China’s trading partners a place to invest their renminbi as easily as they invest their dollars in U.S. Treasuries now.

That means opening China further to foreign investment, a realization that could strengthen the hand of officials advocating faster reform.

“China can only be strong when its currency is a real alternative,” said Chan at Credit Suisse. “But to be an alternative you have to have an open market.”

Josh Duhamel, Fergie Already Planning for Second Baby: “We’ve Gotta Move Fast”

No time to waste! Josh Duhamel and Fergie‘s son, Axl Jack, isn’t even 2 months old — but the Transformers actor already has more babies on the brain. Asked about his bundle of joy at the Salvatore Ferragamo-sponsored Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts Gala in Beverly Hills on Thursday, Oct. 17, the new dad revealed plans for more just like little Axl.

PHOTOS: Josh and Fergie’s wedding album

“It’s the best thing ever,” Duhamel, 40, told Access Hollywood of parenthood. “It’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s fantastic.”

It’s so fantastic, in fact, that the star is worried Axl has given him and the Black Eyed Peas singer, 38, a false sense of comfort. “He’s a really good little baby, which means the second one will be a holy terror!” the proud papa quipped, laughing.

So a second one is in the cards? “Of course! Yeah, we’ve gotta move fast,” the actor said, noting that he and Fergie are “beyond happy.”

Married since 2009, the elated couple welcomed their first child together on Thursday, Aug. 29, in L.A. A few days after Axl’s birth, Duhamel took to Twitter to thank fans for their well wishes.

“All is good!” he tweeted. “In fact, never better. Much love, JD.”

The Future of iOS Gaming Will Take Place in the Real World

Apple has always embraced apps and games that demonstrate the strengths of its mobile platform, giving them prominent positions in the App Store or even letting them demo onstage at keynote events. Now the company is focusing beyond the screen with games that use iOS as a backbone for real world gameplay. The latest and greatest? Anki Drive.

This AI-enhanced racing game lets you control toy cars using a free iOS app. Each car has a unique personality and identity, and can detect and react to other cars as it zooms around a race track. Apple surprised many of us when it let this stealth startup debut onstage at WWDC this summer. But now Anki Drive will be available in Apple Stores and online starting October 23 for $200.

“The games and toys we’ve played with since our childhood haven’t really changed much in decades — you still see kids with blocks, race cars, and teddy bears,” Anki CEO and founder Boris Sofman said. “You contrast that with the evolution of the video game industry which has skyrocketed and taken advantage of almost every major technological advancement. We thought, why couldn’t you have the best of both worlds?”

Anki does just that, using AI to give videogame smarts like character evolution to physical objects — in this case, toy race cars. Each car is smart on its own, with a 50 Mhz micro controller onboard, but they use Bluetooth LE and the processing power of an iOS device to handle the sophisticated control algorithms that let the car not only know its position on the track, but also react and strategize against other racing cars. You can race friends or family on the track, a vinyl sheet you roll out onto the floor, with each of you controlling your own car using the app, or you can race against a computerized AI opponent. You can also just sit back, set multiple cars on autopilot, and take bets on which AI vehicle — each designed by renowned automotive designer Harald Belker — will win. Positioning on the track, speed, and virtual weapons like a tractor beam or rail gun can be employed to win a game as well.

Trying out Anki Drive for the first time, it took only a few minutes to get a hang of the strategy involved in beating your opponent (in my case, the first to get five shots on another car). It was also clear that it would take practice to race against the harder levels of Anki’s robotic opponents. The more you play, the more your car gets optimized to you personally, both through the way you play and through the digital features you can upgrade your car with.

“We think Apple was pretty excited to see how its mobile device and technology helped unlock an entirely new way to create video games in the real world,” Sofman said. “Mobile devices are a natural frontrunner for the ‘brains’ behind consumer robotics applications.”

Anki’s not alone in this field, though.

Orbotix co-founder Ian Bernstein told WIRED that he thinks this new realm of mixed-reality gaming is a revolutionary experience.

Orbotix makes a Bluetooth-controlled robotic ball called Sphero that can be used in conjunction with about 25 iOS games (it’s Android compatible, too). Through these apps, the ball can transform from a pseudo game of Simon to a zombie killing machine to an artistic tool. But without a smartphone, Sphero is just a regular old plastic ball.

Why would Apple take a shine to Sphero? In addition to offering it in its stores, the company went so far as to create a commercial highlighting the ball’s propensity to inspire creativity.

Sphero isn’t just a toy; it’s a platform in and of itself, with its own API and SDK developers can use to create more mobile apps and richer experiences with the Sphero ball. It is also an educational tool — existing apps let aspiring developers of all levels string together pieces of code to choreograph a series of Sphero actions. And as the commercial shows, Apple also sees the device as being in line with its own company ideals.

Products like Anki Drive and Sphero are increasingly showing that mobile devices aren’t just tiny computers for accessing the internet and making phone calls. They’ve grown so powerful they can now give life to other devices.

Colin Blogs: Wines I'm Drinking: 2010 Montebaldo Garganega/Pinot …

Tonight I tasted the 2010 Montebaldo Garganega/Pinot Grigio, an inexpensive wine I picked up at my local Grocery Outlet. It turned out to be light but tasty–just the sort of thing to go with pasta and pesto sauce. This wine, from the area around Venice, ?is 70% Garganega, 30% Pinot Grigio, the latter emphasized on the label, probably on the assumption that fewer people are familiar with Garganega than Pinot Grigio, but Garganega is the grape that makes really good Soave good, and this wine had many of the characteristics of a well made Soave.?Brief tasting notes follow.

Medium straw color. Simple grapey scents, but also with a suggestion of something nutty. Perhaps scents of candied citrus rind as well. Overall, a bit distant. Light on the palate as well, but not at all without interest. Nice balance between a ripe but delicate fruitiness and a lingering crisp acidity. Moderate to good length with the finish marked by nutty flavors and a very slight bitterness. In no way profound, but tasty wine nevertheless. Very attractively priced at $4.99 a bottle at Santa Rosa Grocery Outlet. Recommended for everyday drinking. I went back to buy a case of this. Perfect with pesto (as noted above). I bet it’d be good with other pasta dishes not using a tomato sauce (white clam sauce, perhaps?), with herbed fish, or with a simply flavored pork dish. ?

Atlantic City Casinos To Close Sunday Afternoon ? CBS Philly

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) ? For the second time in little over a year, a hurricane is shutting down Atlantic City?s casinos.

With Hurricane Sandy taking aim at New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie ordered Atlantic City?s 12 casinos to shut down at 4 p.m. Sunday as part of his statewide emergency declaration.

It will mark the fourth time in the 34-year history of legalized gambling in Atlantic City that the casinos have been shuttered. Last year, the approach of Hurricane Irene shut the casinos down for three days in August.

Atlantic City Mayor Lorenzo Langford urges residents to take advantage of bus rides off the island to mainland shelters. For those who won?t go, the city can hold 3,000 people in its schools.

Citywide evacuations will start at noon Sunday and run through 10 p.m.
